Stephen K. Postema is Of Counsel at Conlin, McKenney & Philbrick, P.C., where he focuses on municipal law, litigation, employment law, and mediation. An Ann Arbor native, Stephen has practiced law in Ann Arbor since 1986 and joined CMP Law in 2023.

Ann Arbor’s Longest-Serving City Attorney

Before joining the firm, Stephen was the longest-serving City Attorney employed by Ann Arbor, defending the city in cases involving the Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, civil rights, employment law, negligence, governmental immunity, qualified immunity, takings, and constitutional law. Many of those cases set legal precedent in Michigan. He served eight years on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, including two terms as President, and spent another eight years on the Michigan Municipal League’s Legal Defense Fund, shaping legal strategy on cases affecting municipalities statewide.

Beyond the Courtroom

Stephen is a Michigan Supreme Court-certified mediator and has served as a case evaluator on the commercial, negligence, and employment panels in Washtenaw County for over thirty years. He speaks on municipal law topics to attorneys and public officials at both the state and national level and has taught a law school seminar on state and local government law.
