Stephen K. Postema is an Ann Arbor native and has practiced law in Ann Arbor since 1986. He was the longest serving City Attorney for Ann Arbor. He joined CMP in 2023.

Mr. Postema is of counsel to the firm. He specializes in mediation and facilitation, municipal law, litigation, and employment law.

He is a trusted legal advisor and has significant experience in managing legal risk.

Mr. Postema has particular expertise in Municipal Law, having defended the City of Ann Arbor in numerous cases, including those involving the Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, civil rights, employment law, negligence, governmental immunity, qualified immunity, takings, and constitutional law. Many of these cases set legal precedent in the state.

Mr. Postema served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys for eight years, serving two terms as the President of the Board. He continues in an advisory function as a Past President. He also served eight years on the Michigan Municipal League’s Legal Defense Fund, assisting with legal strategy on cases impacting municipalities across the state.

Mr. Postema has been a speaker on municipal law topics to municipal attorneys and officials, both statewide and nationally, and has taught a law school seminar on state and local government law.

Mr. Postema has served as a case evaluator the commercial, negligence, and employment panels in Washtenaw County for over thirty years. He has also been called upon to mediate all manner of civil cases.
